What's the best way to get decals on a helmet?

Hand paint or something else? I'm looking for as cheap of solution as possible. I'm making a tribute to James Hunt's helmet.

short of airbrushing I'd say adhesive vinyl would be your best bet, but only if your helmet is Fibreglass, not polycarbonate, you'll have to check what adhesive you're using to make sure it won't damage the polycarbonate.

The helmet is 20 years old, I'm not worried about ruining its integrity. I didn't think of airbrushing, thanks!

seeings as you're only going 4 base colours you could use a stencils and rattle cans.

You'll still want the vinyl or something to stencil it out though.

Make design in photoshop or whatever, or find one online.
Print on sticker paper to make a sticker or thick paper to make a stencil.
Sand the gloss of the helmet.
Clean it of any dust
Apply design to helmet.
Clear coat over using compatible paint. Follow instructions on can.
Wet sand and buff until desired shine is achieved.

if its 20 years old its probably not legal to use it for trackdays/racing anyways. Would make a kickass display piece though.
